Light refreshments and fellowship following
Columbia Friends Meetinghouse
120 Pisgah Church Road, Columbia, SC 29203
Join with others to remember the 140,000 lives lost in the devastating atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945, to remind ourselves of the continuing threat of nuclear weapons even today, and to commit to acts of peace that share our fervent desire that nuclear weapons never be used again.
The event will begin with a short, silent Vigil of Remembrance. Following will be an update on the Columbia Peace Pole Initiative (including description of the planned “Persimmon Peace Pole” by artist Olga Yukhno), the announcement of “The Last Cherry Blossom” books-to-schools campaign, and a report on the status of current and proposed nuclear weapons production in South Carolina.
Also available will be the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum’s poster collection, origami peace cranes for all to take and share and light refreshments.
In 1991, members of the Columbia Friends Meeting (Religious Society of Friends – Quakers) held the first Hiroshima Vigil. The current interfaith, multicultural Hiroshima Remembrance Committee also coordinates the Columbia Peace Pole Initiative.
