Professor Emeritus, Health Sciences and Sustainability, Furman University and Conservation
Chair of the Foothills Sierra Club Group, Frank Powell, for a discussion about the climate crisis and food.

He explained the connection between Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) and
greenhouse gases. The effects of food waste and the health effects of eating meat processed in a way
that is bad for the environment as well as the animals themselves will be considered. Loss of carbon
sequestration through degradation of the soil and loss of tree cover resulting from commercial
agricultural practices to feed animals will be discussed as well as many other climate change effects resulting from meat production.
