Saving our Soil

Last week, young Friends and I presented information about Saving our Soil during program hour. The Save Soil movement is an initiative bringing people and leaders together to counter soil degradation and restore the organic ecosystems that play a vital role in maintaining soil health.
In 150 years the USA has lost  over 50% of its topsoil. The earth will run out of usable topsoil in 60 years.  According to the UNCCDhttps://www.unccd.int/news-stories/statements/world-soil-day-2020-keep-soil-alive-protect-biodiversity around 33% of the planet’s land is already degraded. And, unless we rapidly change how we manage our soils, 90% of it could become degraded by 2050 and result in a global food crisis. Healthy soil can stem climate change, water scarcity, and food shortages.

With the Save Soil movement we are aiming to increase the global organic content of soil to a minimum of 3% to 6%, which is the baseline for it to be sustainably healthy soil. To this end there is a campaign to generate global awareness for this issue and spearhead policy changes on soil management. If you know of an event or school that would be open to learning about the issue, please let me know. I am happy to share info or to be directly involved.
To aid this effort please write a letter to the President and ask for soil policies that protect our soil from degradation. The President of the United States of America White House Office1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW Washington, DC 20500
