Paul Black and Frank Powell will present their strategies about how to respond to the climate crisis by
reducing energy burdens and changing animal agriculture.

Paul Black, community organizer in South Carolina for Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal
Campaign will continue his May discussion about energy burdens with specific
strategies about how to increase energy democracy by reducing energy burdens. He
will recommend actions concerning utility Integrated Resource Plans (IRP) and
interacting with the Public Service Commission (PSC) Suggested talking points will
be presented for PSC hearings regarding IRPs and the importance of showing up at
these public hearings. He will emphasize public stories of how rate increases, and fossil fuels have impacted lives of those in South Carolina.
Frank Powell, Professor Emeritus, Health Sciences and Sustainability, Furman
University and Conservation Chair of the Foothills Sierra Club Group will continue
his April discussion about influencing those who are involved with animal
agriculture to rethink how to increase life expectancy, reverse degenerative
disease and reduce greenhouse gases He will focus on pollution, personal choice,
government subsidies and reforming SNAP. He will explore strategies relating to
the farm bill and the ways in which it is affecting the climate crisis and human
and animal health.
